i was wondering what would happen if you were to add to much clorine donor (parlon) if it is even posible. when you add more clorine do the colors get brighter or richer? i'm not sure. searched the net but couldnt find an answer.

Eventually the composition won't burn properly as it becomes overloaded with fuel.

There are some mixes around there which use >15g PVC per 100g mix. These often start to give off massive amounts of black ash :D

I don?t think that it is possible to use to much PVC or Parlon. The problem is only that the burning rate will be slower.

But it isn?t useful to use to great amounts of chlorine donor. For exsample in Barium containing mixtures it is just necessary to ensure that there is enough chlorine that all the barium can ract do bariumchloride.

If you add too much of a chlorine donor the flame will most likely change colour .
I talk from experience.

I added too much of it to a blue comp. and somehow i got a yellow but it was fine earlier when there was just a little of it in.

And there went 100 grams of perfectly fine blue comp.

If you add too much, two things will happen. One the fuel ratio will be overwhelming and the comp will slow or even become unignitable. The other is that chlorine donor is chlorine and other materials will affect the color and the burn temp.

Yes, that?s right. You have to change the weight ratio of the fuels and the chlorine donor. Some chlorine containing chemikals also wor as fuel in star compositions. Parlon for exsample is a very good fuel.

I never noticed a change of the color because using to much PVC or Parlon. But I have to say that I didn?t tested many blue burning compositions.

As with any ratio mix in pyrotechnic its an exact reaction between oxidizer/a fuel/and normally a color donor sometimes requiring a clorine donor to fully convert or react w/ gases or solids to give colors.

If you alter the ratio's to give more clorine donor when its not needed its going to make the stars/ or comets burn slower and it wont be as bright "less color"

I remeber a friend working on a comp where pvc was replaced w/ parlon
and it needed more fuel because pvc is a fuel of sorts as well as a clorine donor.

Saran on the other hand might be worth trying if your dialing in a comp.
because it has more colorine donor per weight then parlon.

Also adding more fuel can sometimes give better colors as a hotter flame helps all reactions occur faster and more readily." red gum" for example

I learned the basics of fuel,oxidizer,color additives realationships in comps from
" Tom Perigrins" book the "Introductory Practical Pyrotechnics" I feel this was absolutly nessary to make a safe and knowledgeable start in making projects,let alone altering comp's or tring to desighn my own.
I'm not saying that one could not obtain better or comparable info from other sources but I highly recomend spending time reading and researching until you understand the basic's before metaling in unfamilar territory which is often unwise and can be unsafe like in the case with kclo3.
