Interesting. How did you prepare the Ba- and Sr-benzoates?

I simply added HCl to ammonium benzoate that Instantly forms an near insoluble ppt of Benzoic acid, this is then washed several times and filtered off.

this was then reacted with the Hydroxides of each metal. there are alternate routes however, but this thread is about Copper Benzoate, so best not discussed in here.

Here are a few pucks of copper benzoate I made earlier (washed and filtered 3 times) sitting in my drying cupboard.

Removing free water won't remove bound water. What I mean is that while it will be physically dry, it wont be chemically dry. It carries with it 3 waters of hydration. For optimum color production, you will probably want to remove these. The product becomes darker if I remember upon fully drying.

Thanks, I have dried a small amount on my hot plate and it goes considerably darker when anhydrous.

I have done a flame test on it, mmmm very nice blue. So at the weekend I will knock up a sample of a few different formula to see how it performs.

Here is picture of hydrated and anhydrous copper benzoate. I have tried a couple of formula, chlorate way to fast, but the ammonium perc formula shows promise.
