I have tried before using rice krispies, but didn't have much luck. It all just turned into a big clumpy mess.

Can anyone give me the correct procedure for making BP coated krispies? im not to sure of the ratios, or whether tho moisten the BP or the krispies?

Im getting in to making larger shells now (about to start some 3 inch cylindrical) and up to now, they are performing quite well. But the burst charge im using is granulated BP, but because of the larger shell size, its rapilly eating into my BP stocks!!!

This is the way I do it, I take my fast milled blackpowder and screen in Dextrin or SGRS. Now you have your blackpowder with its binder. If you want to add whistle then you can, I add 10% by weight of blackpowder if needed. Now you have your mixture, place it to one side ensuring all components a well mixed. (If using whistle do not screen this in only diaper it in)

Now you work out you ratio of burst:carrier I use 2.5:1 so for 250g break I measure 100g of Rice crispies, these are then added to a nice big plastic food storage container and sprayed until all are damp not soaking!! Now you can slowly add your break charge in bits, you can get messy and roll the crispies to pickup the powder. Once they have picked up as much as they can you spray them again and keep going until all the powder is gone. No place in a warm place on sheets of greaseproof paper and allow it to dry.

You will find this way of dong it works well, If they go really soppy your maybe wetting the burst powder and not the carrier or using waaaayyy too much water. Coating burst carriers is like making round stars and you can even use a star roller for this job if you wish.

Hope this helps :D

I have wanted Rice hulls for a long time but cant find any in the UK..I know you can get them from skylighter but when you add shipping it does work out Expensive, also because of the large volume that they take up i think postage will cost more than it says on there website..

Me too, Corn cobs don't work anywhere nearly as well as a burst should in my opinion. Does anyone know of a U.K. source for Rice hulls?
I look forward to any replies!

Regards,

Mike

I too have failed in my search for rice hulls. They're supposed to be used in brewing, but none of the homebrewing suppliers have ever heard of them, let alone know of a source.

Has anyone tried the oat husks suggested here?

As i know if you only order ricehulls the shipping will be more expensive, because of the size.
