Why do you want to use sodium chlorate? It is only useful for one purpose only - making potassium chlorate.

OK in defence of weedy old weedkiller here is a top trade secret only for you guys... Make a saturated solution of the stuff. Mix it with meths in a ratio of 1 part weedkiller to three of meths. (any stronger and it wont really burn, any weaker and you lose the effect.
Tie a wad of something onto a 1m stick. I use thick cellulose rope but a roll of cotton cloth will probably do.
Dip it in to soak, stick the other end of the stick in the ground and light and stand well back...............
Pretty...
Then write and tell me that there is no use for sodium chlorate.
P.S. If you have more patience than I do you can dip it in pure weedkiller solution and allow to dry, then dip in pure meths - = effext x2

Forgive me for being fussy but Pot. Chlorate is KClO3 & sodium chlorate is NaClO3- NaClO & KClO are the ions. There's no issue with having salt in the solution, just make sure you take it into account when working out solubilities. As for the procedure, search for potassium chlorate & you'll find a link...

Seperating the NaClO3 from the fire depressant is a simple case of mechanical seperation(In the case of the doff brand). The NaClO3 crystals are very large the size of small pin heads and the fire depressant is like fine castor sugar. I simply winnow the fine stuff off in the wind by pouring the weedkiller from one container to another a few times in the wind.
Then i'm left with pure NaClO3

Doff is the manufactures name. You will know it when you see it, it is in a yellow container and it will have some other colours on it. When you do buy it, make sure it is Sodium Chlorate and not anything else as Doff sell other chemicals and the packaging is very similar. You can buy it from garden centres, thats where I get mine from
