I was hoping to get some lithium so i could make my own Lithium salts to give nice red colours and not many places sell them. I have been told that manganese dioxide lithium batteries contain relitivly pure lithium. is this true?
All comments welcome :)

Lithium cells contain lithium, lithium-ion contain lithium salts, and lithium polymer cells will be pretty useless to you. Don't touch it with bare hands

it`s worth noting also that Many Li salts are Very Hygroscopic, making them almost useless for pyro in any robust way.

I have Li salts here in the Lab, you have to prep everything ready before you dare take the lid off, any more than a few seconds open to the air and it gets Hot, drop a little and it will puddle before your eyes, and that`s a low 32% Humidity.

I have heard of that before but lithiu carbonate and sulphate salts do not do this. I dont agree with you however on saying li salts are useless for pyro. I have made a good fountain red coloured useing homemade li carbonate and it wasnt too bad. nice deep red

perhaps I was a little TOO general in my description, Li salts as Oxidisers are mostly useless, lets put it that way :)

Lithium Chloride is great for making deep red Methanol flames, I've also heard of Lithium Nitrate being used for red go-getters. They're both hygroscopic, but certainly not useless.

I qualified my initial statement with: "making them almost useless for pyro in any robust way."

note: `Almost` and `Robust`. I never said Totally :)

Hi

I am not sure about the chloride as I have not handled it however the bromide is extremly hygroscopic. During my first year inorganic chem labs we had to identify salt samples and the (small) sample of the bromide i was given turned into a puddle within minutes which made analysis a fair bit harder.

Regards

Rich
