A mine with a
large and short case, carrying a charge of tailed stars, serpents,
and English crackers, and having one Roman candle in its center
and four others, matched to burn simultaneously, attached to the
outside of the case, is known as a devil among the tailors.

I would not dissagree with the good Mr Davis, but that's only his definition (made about 60 years ago).

Clearly the Pains devil (first pic on my page) only has three surrounding candles.

"Several fireworky things surrounding a mine which may or may not have another fireworky in the middle"

hmmm - could get a bit silly. Does not do to be too dogmatic about these things - who really cares about exact definitions anyway!

Lets make some fireworks!

Hi Mortartube.

Yes, there were many variations on this theme. I think I mention the possibility of a candle in the centre in my article, but i've never seen them around the outside.

I'm sure this would have looked good, although I quite like the fountains, as there seems to be more contrast between the Tailors and the Devil this way!

You pays your money and you takes your choice!

The Standard fireworks DATT that I remember (reasonably large for retail - the ones without the pictorial wrapping) definitely had Roman candles round the outside - I guess they would have been maybe 15mm calibre, and I think a fountain in the middle. If I manage to make it to a meet soon, I'm goingto try to knock up a biggie.
Trying to do something very beautiful but very dangerous very safely....
