If you're buying from a year round firework store for example, they will usually give you a few portfires free with your fireworks.

exactly - I can't think of a time I have ever charged for them...

If I run out of portfires, I use my long handle lighter (about £ 3.99 from wilkinsons) with long welding gloves (but with a little slit cut into the thumb to allow ease of operating the lighter).

Other than that, It might be worth trying those wind proof turbo flame lighters! (never tried them myself).

I know this probably sounds aload of rubbish lol! But, do you think you could use sparklers as a sort of delay.

Say you were lighting a fountain, and wanted a small cake to light towards the end of the fountain, do you think it would be possible to light a sparkler and position the fuse of the firework towards the bottom of it (sparkler), do you think it would all work out lol.
I know it sounds abit of a mouthful but just a thaught that I may try! lol

well in theory it could work, if you use some gaffa tape or something to secure to fuses to the sparkler. i wouldn't rely on it though, it's highly unlikey that the timing will be accurate i.e the fountian may burn out before the cake starts to fire or the cake might start before the fountain has finished. It's deffinately something worth trying though :)

I don't see the issue with using sparkles as igniter's no.

There shouldn't be an issue such as was mentioned earlier of sparks pre igniting things as they should be properly protected anyway and the sparks don't actually travel far anyway. One issue will be though that as it burns down it will have a wire sticking out past the flame front which will make it awkward to ignite fuses close to units.
