when using pvc based 'fimo' in star formula is it ok to dissolve the 'fimo' in a soultion of ipa (isopropyl alchol) i know it dissolves of probably quicker in warm ipa. has anyone ever used 'fime' as the chlorine donor?

I really doubt it will dissolve in an alcohol, try a ketone like acetone.

it did take a while but it did dissolve and dried to a useable powder, maybe acetone will be quicker.

not really a supplier, but i was talking to a guy who knows his stuff and he said electrical cabling(the plastic bit) was made from PVC.

is this the PVC that works in pyro, or is it the useless stuff?

just wondering as i use many metres of thick wire, and much of the plastic is peeled off and thrown away.

Bear in mind that additives are frequently incorperated to change the mechanical properties of the material. I would be sceptical of success. Even if it made the best chlorine donor in the world I would have little inclination to start reducing cable insulation to anything near useful in terms of mesh size!

Just to let you all know I'll probably be getting 25kgs of a 70% Cl donor in the new year if anyone is interested. PM me so I can get an idea of demand then I will sort out pricing.

Im after some PVC myself and have found a UK supplier.

www.hobbychem.co.uk sell 100% PVC powder, however I have been told they are out of stock untill mid january. Price quote was ?5.90 for 500 grams. I don't know if this cheap or not as I havent found anyone else to compare it to.

They also have Perchlorates and Aluminium/Magnesiun powder due in the same time.

Sounds like a good price to me, I will certainly be buying some, the other stuff seems a bit expensive though, ?19 for 2.5kg of Potassium Nitrate is quite expensive, it's only ?10.75 for 2kg from Garden Direct. Also the Willow Charcoal, I would love so much to get hold of some but not at ?12.00 for 500g.

Do you know how much the magnesium will cost?

Hi,

I checked and it is ?12 for 500 grams of 300 mesh magnesium powder. Im gonna be getting me some of that when it arrives!

I have brought potassium chlorate and willow charcoal from hobbychem and have been impressed with the quality.

Ive made willow charcoal myself and it is a pain in the arse. Cutting up wood, drying it for weeks, de-barking, cooking, cooling, breaking it up and then ball milling it. Not to mention the mess it makes, everything in the area gets a fine coating of black dust. The 500 grams I got from hobbychem lasted for ages and it was better (burnt faster) than the stuff I made myself.

"Very high purity, in eaisily powdered prill form" Now to me that sounds like he has got that from a garden centre! How can he be sure of the purity!

me being ever the optimist  ... im sure that sulphur isnt ball milled, just straight out of the packet because it is VERY much like what comes straight out of the pack from my suppliers and is inface Flowers. (But ofcourse you cant be sure!)
And the charcoal is the same as what my chemical supplier sells!

I have a suspicion it mite be someone on this forum! ... Not that theres anything wrong with that.. apart from...

Ahwell good luck to him! :)

Have found this site: http://www.fi-clor.co.uk

I thought that maybe some of the products listed here might be suitable to use as a chlorine donor, although I'm not really sure. Any thoughts?

I've used much of their range as raw materials in industry.

Apart from the Calcium Hypochlorite, they sell Trichloroisocyanuric acid hydrates and derivatives.

These are very probably useless for pyro as the chlorine is released at low temperatures, with small quantities of water and will react with metals.

Contact with organic materials can cause spontaneous ignition and we had a couple of explosions on compression!

(we had great fun testing this stuff against various materials. :P, produces orange smoke with methyl anthranillate! :) )
