I was reading on some local councils web sites on regulations ect for storage and come across this which i thought was rather strange.
"It is illegal to sell Toy fireworks to any person apparently under the age of sixteen years.
NOTE - This applies to such things as caps, cracker snaps, novelty
matches, party poppers, serpents, and throwdowns."
is this true, sounds a bit over the top if it is, i know loads of shops that would sell to under 16 these items ??

It does sound possibble.
Party Popper and Serpents are Cat 1 fireworks, I'm not sure about the rest.

2. for anyone under the age of 18 to possess Adult* fireworks or sparklers in a public place.
* Any fireworks except for caps, cracker-snaps, indoor fireworks, novelty matches, party poppers, serpents and throw-downs"
Doesn't say anything about under 16s. Can't be bothered to trawl legislation for actual answers, but if I see it on a wall somewhere soon I'll let you know.

So presumably it is legal to sell those items to under 18s.
OK, interest in fireworks to be resumed in the spring. It usually is.

Morrisons don't sell party poppers to under 16s. (even the explosive free ones!)

Unless it has been repealed, section 31 of the Explosives Act 1875 prohibits the sale of gunpowder to persons apparently under sixteen........this would include party poppers and caps

The consumer magazine "Which" ran an article about garden fireworks in October 1965. It ended by saying "remember it is illegal to sell fireworks to children under the age of 13"!

At 16 you can get married and have children (with parental consent) at 17 you can drive a car, you can drink (but not buy) alcohol from the age of 5, but you have to be 18 to buy fireworks!
