Interesting, a typical 3" spherical Ti Salute has anywhere between 70g and 130g of flash.

Ah, when we compare to the Cat 3 maximum, which would be just over 6g.... and thats at 1.3G!
OK, interest in fireworks to be resumed in the spring. It usually is. ;)

And a 3" salute should be at 75 metres safety distance plus the achieved height say 100m That's a minimum of 125metres range which is a LOT more than a 25m cat3 device

Keep mannequins and watermelons away from fireworks..they always get hurt..

I would assume a "stop fireworks" website (I wont do them the favour by including a link to their website ffs) could possible over egg the decibel pudding somewhat :)

That may certainly be the case, yes. But I don't think it hurts to consider the issue, and indeed to present a logical and reasoned responce. In this specific instance, it was indeed a curiously high figure, which got me wondering about the topic in general.

(Edited to keep the post on-topic.)

I've found a very interesting report comissioned by Le Maitre on the sound levels produced by flash concussion pots above a stadium during a WWE event.

LeMaitre Farnfield Report

It makes for a good warning on how easy it is to exceed the 140dB threshold of instantaneous hearing damage, even with just 2g of flash.

The 140dB limiting distances found for various flash charges were:

2g - 7m
5g - 13m
10g - 20m
14g - 25m
19g - 30m

It's certainly recommended reading for anyone using salutes / maroons / concussion pots in whatever context...
