I've been making my own tubes and shells from day 1 of this very demanding and excitable hobby, I've always used various strengths of pva and always found it a sticky job.
For some reason I decided to look up wheat paste, and made some.
CHEERIO P.V.A. ( for shells, not tubes )
I wished I'd made some 3 years ago.
Anybody that's never tried it, give it a bash.
It dries quicker, it's not as sticky ( you don't have to scrub up every time you want to pick your pint pot up ) and I'm thinking they have a more brittle break, if that's the right word, meaning the shell bursts in many more pieces than pva, giving a rounder sky burst. If that doesn't make sense, I'm sure someone will be along soon to clarify.
I had given up with shells, but now I'm making again.
Ho happy days

Our saviours : In the ninth century, a team of Chinese alchemists trying to synthesize an "elixir of immortality" from saltpeter, sulfur, realgar, and dried honey instead invented gunpowder.

I swear by it.
The only thing is that it doesn't keep long enough, I am trying to work out how to add a preservative so I can keep it in the fridge longer.
