I was reading on PML about a explosion at a illegal firework factory in Ohio that was making M80'S, M100'S Apparently 9 people were literaly blown to bits.

I haven't seen anything on the news about this and was wondering if anyone here has any more details.

I can't help thinking this may have a adverse affect on the societys goals. What are peoples thorghts on this ? would this have happened if M80's wern't banned (creating another blackmarket product and the illegal unregulated manufacture that goes with it).

RIP fellow pyros.

What sort of quantity of flash could do this sort of damage? they certainly weren't doing it just as a hobby! At least they would have known nothing about it, God rest their souls.

Unfortunately if these were publicly available there is just too much opportunity for misuse, - cash machine b***n up ?
They have to remain controlled / licenced.

In any quantity they would also need a cat 1.1 store I suspect.

Such things are always very bad news, not least for the individuals involved, their families and those living near the incident.

However, I don't think it really impacts on the situation in the UK in any way.

I have very little sympathy with anyone involved with M - anything - ie an excuse for personal hand grenades! This is the farthest fringe of firework making to my mind, having neither skill or beauty.

It sounds as if huge amounts were involved, but even 500g of flash in a small shed is likely to kill all those in the building. Too high a price for infantile enertainment I think...

It'd bad news for those involved, and a warning to those who think flash is safe.

BUT it also shows that illegal manufacture will happen so a regulated manufacture could be safer.

Apparently 'barrel loads'.

I can't help thinking 'the powers that be' might argue that it would be difficult to disquinguish between amature and commercial manufacture.

Personal hand granades with paper shrapnel maybe, as with anything it's the misuse that causes the problems....i think the 'skill' when it comes to these things is not blowing yaselfs to bits whilst making them !!

I'm guessing but i suppose their must have been a fair few fatal explosions making M80's etc whilst they were legal, i wonder if the people making them knew the risks they were taking?? i'm thinking of the Chinese cockle pickers that drowned in Cumbria whilst being exploited.

One thing I do not understand why. And for whom they were being made in the first place.
Outside of large displays and military I see little legal use.

Can anyone tell me why the best reference for a Ohio State incident is the LA Times.

Ohio is North East USA by the Great Lakes, and LA is south west by the Pacific.

There is a place for 'salutes' and maroons as part of a display. The shock value on the crowd can be quite effective! Old Italian displays used to end with the 'Dead Head' (5kg of flash in bag suspended from a 'gallows'!) and English ones traditionally started with an aerial maroon.

However, I suspect that these were destined for kids and rednecks to cause a nuisance or worse. In the UK, we never really got beyond big bangers and even those got banned due to misuse. Come to think of it how would you use them? I never found a place for them in my back garden displays - rather a nice Roman Candle than a box of bangers.

No way! I loved bangers! Back garden fireworks were never "displays" - not at our house anyway.

I can remember my Dad lighting all our fireworks - fountains, candles, wheels etc. But dispersed through the evening he would slyly light a banger and throw it into the corner of the garden.

The sudden report would draw squeals of alarm from the females and laughter from the men (and boys).

Of course these weren't huge flash salutes, just a few grams of BP, but they definitely had a place.

I have very fond memories of all fireworks and bangers are right up there with the best of them.

To each his own!

Must say, you always get a lot of good 'banger stories' when we have a UKPS tent at a big display - heard so many that i could write a book1

The story is from 1985 hence the lack of news coverage! :D
