It's been quite a few years since the UKPS visited the Royal Gunpowder Mills and we're looking at doing it again.

If we can get 20 people together at £10 per head, then we can have our own private tour on Friday 20th September.

We've chosen this date as it is the day before our Experimentation Day and the Gunpowder Mills are not too far from the experimentation venue near Stevenage, so it made sense to roll these together, to make the trip more worthwhile for or more distant members.

If you'd like to come and visit the Gunpowder Mills, please add your name to the following list:

Steve (Pyromancer)

I've pasted in an e-mail from the Gunpowder Mills for extra info:

Hello Stephen,

We normally limit group visits to Wednesdays and Thursdays as this is when the majority of our volunteers are available, however I am happy to arrange a visit for Friday 20th September.

Please could you provide me with further information, including how many people will be visiting?

Our Group Rate per Adult is: £8.00.

Concessions (over 60 & students): £7.00

(Please note there is a minimum charge for 20 people).

Note -  There is an additional charge of £2 per person for our Land Train Guided Tour.

The tour lasts about 40 minutes and will allow you to view areas of the site that are not accessible on foot.

You will see the remains of many of the buildings used in the production of explosives including the Nitrator (where nitroglycerine was manufactured), Newton's Pool which is 12 meters deep and used for the testing of underwater explosives including the explosive used in the "bouncing bomb" and the Press House where the gunpowder was pressed to improve it's explosive properties.

You will also see the remains of the extensive canal and railway network used to transport the raw materials and final products around the site.

Our extensive site of 170 acres is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The area is home to many types of wildlife including Fallow Deer, Muntjac deer, rabbits, hare, dragon fly and contains one of the largest heronry in Essex.

Please let us know if you require catering. This can be booked in advance.

We offer Tea/Coffee and biscuits on arrival (£1.95 per person)

A variety of meal options are also available for lunch.

If you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact me.

Count me in Steve. If people want to camp on the Thursday night as well to make it easy, they are more than welcome.

It'll be an all day event, but I'm guessing we'd aim to start about 10 or 11am.

Yes, it's going ahead - if we don't get 20, we will meet up and give ourselves a tour anyway...

Looks like we've go about 16 or 17 people for the Royal Gunpowder Mills tour.

They need a minimum booking group booking for 20 people (£160) and £2 each for the 'Land Train'.

If we're willing to cover the minimum group booking cost between us then they'd be happy to open for us on Friday 20th September.

So assuming we get 16 people turn up then it'll cost £12 each including the 'land train' element of the guided tour.

I suggest we each budget of £15 per person in case we get any last minute drop outs.

Is everyone happy with that?

I suggest we aim for to arrive there (Royal Gunpowder Mills, Beaulieu Drive, Waltham Abbey, Essex, EN9 1JY) for 10:30am on Friday 20th September.

Please post on here to confirm that you'll be there and that you're happy with the slightly higher price and suggested arrival time.
