For those that do not know, their are approx 200 types of dextrin available and every one has different criteria. If you want to make your own, a difference in 5 degrees in the baking temperature will create a totally different type of dextrin than if it was baked at 5 degrees hotter or cooler, the same with the baking time.
As all carbohydrates will dissolve in water the amount and the cohesiveness will vary widely depending on the baking temperature and the time that it was in the baking oven. the end result may well be a dextrin that dissolves but with no cohesivenss capabillity.= your star will fall apart or have no strength in it.
So be wary that you may not be getting the best from dextrin as an adhesive.

The batch I made seems to work quite well, although once my small supply runs out i'm just going to get it commercially from a UK supplier.

P.S - Just found an online supplier of orange shellac powder.

Yes it is cheap, I pay ?45 per 25kg bag when I buy four.

shellac and red gum can be bought from an art supplier called (i think) A P Fitzpatric.

Rich, what happened to the list of suppliers i wrote up for the old web site. Cos people are always asking me for these chems which were all referenced in that file. Could you stick it up on the web site some time? if you need a new copy just tell me.
