Heres a press I built a few years ago. The frame ic constructed from welded sections of I-section RSJ girder.

However, it will soon be superceeded by a new press i plan to build. It will have a dual action hydraulic cylinder connected to a remote valve/pump assembly, oil reservoir and a pressure gauge. I have all the components ready, just need to find the time to do the work. Take a look at Steve LaDukes endburning rocket video for a great demonstration of such a press in action.

I had the idea to build a small powerfull electrical press. For example to press spoolettes with a constant pressure or to press mixtures you would never ram like whistle etc.

Further on I thought that an wiper motor is so damn powerful, it could work.

Whats left is the M8 bushing to connect the M8 thread rod of the motor with the thread rod where the "pusher" will slide on.
And the M16 thread rods on each side of the construction are too short. I?ll have to get at least 40cm pieces.

Everything exept the two cap nuts are stainless steel.

I hope this motor is powerful enough to get a proper pressure.

What do you think about this idea?!

im thinking of making a press out of a car jack for corning bp and pressing rockets and was wondering if it would be worrth it as it would brobably only press one ton and i would probably be using it for corning bp more than rockets

Only 1 ton ? I cannot even *find* a 1 ton hydraulic jack at harbor freight, in fact the only jacks under 3 tons are specialty jacks for lifting motorcycles, transmission jacks, etc. 6 or 12 ton jacks are more the norm, and are not very expensive. I bought a complete 12 ton press for $99 US ( the shipping was killer though :) d

You are not talking about using a racheting bumper jack are you ? It might be very difficult to keep your tooling ( rammer, spindle, etc) precisely lined up, and you will ruin them if they get out of line and buckle.

I think its a great idea, do you know what gear ratio it has? Idealy for high torque applications you will need a very high torque motor with worm gears. Would love to see if it works mate, would be good if it can press whistles as i find this still a dangerous task. Hopfully you can get enough press-ablilty from it.

The motor I did not use to build this I opened, It has a worm gear in it. The motor itself turns at about 1200upm, "after the gear" it is about 85upm.
They?re very high torque motors. I hope I get the last tiny part to complete it this week. I?ll keep you informed.

A 1 ton press is generally an arbor press. They are used for smaller things. I think I will get one soon. I don't really press many things that require a larger press. For those I will just rig up my car jack. A 1 ton press runs $40 to $50 US. I press spooletes mainly, and that is a fine size for them. Small bottle rockets too.

This is an arbor press http://www.northernt...s/146702_lg.jpg
