In Topic: Calcium Sulphate

It is allways best to use a composition that someone has allready tested. There are a bunch of formulas on the net and in books. And if you don't find a formula with the chemical you would like to use, it is probably because it can not be used.

Potassium perchlorate is relatively non toxic. There are much more toxic pyro chemicals in use today then perc. But it has the disadvantage of haveing a relatively high price.

Hi Yugen - Just out of interest, what handling precautions do you use for KClO4 - when you say 'relatively non toxic' I was just wondering. I have seen info that suggests this chemical can cause seriuso blood disorders and is a cumulative toxin. I'm not picking an argument so please dont think so! Its just that I have recently acquired some of this and want to be certain that I (and everyone) know how to more safely use it!

Thanks!

Chaps, my blackmatch works very well if I even just wet the string through to soaking before putting it in the slurry. But if soaking string in nitrate solution, I have had good result by dissolving as much nitrate as will go into cold water (until no more will dissolve) and then putting into the blackmatch slurry when still wet. I also use home made dextrin.

Being relatively new to ball milling (made my own machine and its great for Willow and KNO3, (not at the same time) I have tried the similar process you describe.. (angled mill container and holes in lid with filter material. Seemed to have no probs with escape of material but reading the posts I have not milled Al foil for long enough.. a week??!! Well I shall go back and try it out for that length of time

In these many formulas that use Al and KNO3 there does not seem to be much mention of Boric Acid to stop the al/nitrate thing happening and causing potential self ignition... I am here to learn.. does this rule apply only to star formulations, or should we be using a percent or two of boric acid wherever Al and Nitrate (or other oxidisers) come together?

Many many moons ago as a youngster, I dabbled with KMno4, S and Zn dust... the mix without the latter was a hot flame, the dust turned it into an agressive and blinding flash, not confined in a tube.. could easily have been blinded. That alone, notwithstanding the toxicity, would be enough to suggest you seek to marry it off in small amounts at a distance with glycerine. Bad stuff!
