#81387 hydraulics question

Posted by digger on 25 February 2014 - 08:31 AM

Hi Dave

The one I have is double acting, however I beleive that the one on the link is single acting so you will need a spring on the ram to pull it back in (as you have described).

Anyway yes it simply replaces the hand pump. You press down at the front of the unit to extend the ram. The hydraulic pressure maximum is 100 times that of the air pressure, so for 10000 PSI use 100 PSI air pressure. When you want to release the ram simply press back on the pedal to release (pedal should have three positions, compress, hold and release).

Hope this helps

#81114 Licence to purchase chemicals - A show of hands of who would obtain one...

Posted by digger on 23 January 2014 - 09:03 AM

I totally agree, if a company is set-up to conduct pyrotechnic R&D then I would consider this a valid company.  That said, if it could be argued that it was only set-up to circumvent licencing then you could become unstuck.  It could be argued both ways, so why not just get a licence?

Fortunately there is a burden of proof required within law and as far as I am aware innocence is still the state until proved otherwise, so argued does not cut it. Evidence is required and "he said she said" is very rarely useful as evidence alone so you would have to be pretty stupid to come unstuck when only rudimentary records would be required.

I also agree if licensing is a reasonable cost (less than £45 every three years) and is also easily accessible to all then there should not be a problem for most here, and that is fine. However after speaking to suppliers the feeling is that 70% to 80% of people who want to do a few experiments without getting into the hobby, will simply not bother as they will not want to spend the £45 to buy £10 of chemicals. That is a great loss of inspired people, this is not just a pyrotechnics issue but also a general chemistry issue.

I'll say this. If there is a licensing introduced, I'd start selling the likes of ammonium perchlorate, dark aluminium powder, potassium chlorate etc which I currently don't sell over concerns regarding supplying the public with such materials.

Steve I understand your sentiment, but the legislation states that they can add any chemical they like at any time they want to the list, so this strategy would not last for long.

#80339 UKPS 2013 Gathering & Experimentation Day - 21st September - Near Stevena...

Posted by digger on 10 August 2013 - 06:54 AM

me again, being thick again!

Why would there be any need for bp, Steve has said we will be restricted to burning off loose comps?

I don't know if I can get someone to do a shift swap with me so I can attend, I'd love to come but I confess I still don't understand what's allowed.

Is it literally mixing a small batch of a comp and burning it in a pile?

What about pressing a comp into a pellet for testing (star, comet) ? Obviously dextrin / water bound comps won't dry in  time.

Parlon stars perhaps - a mine is presumably a 'device' ? how about a stargun?

Richard, what you wrote above was very interesting and very encouraging, so thanks to Wayne and yourself and anyone else for all your work. Do you know if police force ELO's are aware of this and would accept that as a legitimate reason to apply for an A&K?

Maybe lift for very large fireballs?

One of those rules may mention suitable premises though.
A fair few of the membership may fall foul of that I think.

I have read it cover to cover, I did not see anything relating to business users that mentioned suitable premises. OK I assume a licencing authority would want to ensure suitable premises for a member of the public, but a business would be responsible for ensuring things are done correctly rather than an external authority.

It has to be said though, I would be concerned if my neighbour was storing large amounts of "stuff" in a terraced house which could be a hazard to me.

I feel that we all have a responsibility to ensure what we do is safe and will not affect those around us in the event of an accident. I am a great believer in, if you can't do it safely then don't do it.

We can't afford to do stupid things as we could easily get hammered by the media if we get it wrong.

Do your own risk assessment, however you like.

????? What are you on about.

This is a 5 year old post you have replied to.

P.S one of the hardest to read posts I have ever read.

#79691 Possible training courses 2013

Who is providing the training? Is the IC or BPA based?

There are possible options for either at the moment as I understand it. More information to follow in due course

#79378 Help please - guidance needed

And for your casing issue, wrap a few layers of paper around the casing with pva or some other form of glue to secure, the more layers the better the motor will withstand the duration. Also if doing it the core burner way you will not have too much of an issue on that front as it will be insulated by the propellant for a short time.

Why I suggested a core. With a core the casing issue will most likely solve itself as the grain burns from inside to out, so when the heat hits the PVC there is no propellant left.

With a cored BP rocket I have managed to get casings down to 1.5mm wall thickness where I would have needed 5 - 7 mm with end burners.

#57384 Two very useful priming comps

Posted by digger on 01 July 2009 - 07:06 PM

As Veline`s Superprime has been mentioned:

Am I right that the Superprime is intented to be used as a 1-stage prime? Or is there a need for a second layer?

When I read the original text by Robert Veline, I come to the conclusion that the further statement is appropriate. But will one layer of Superprime really light all of Veline´s system stars?

How do you usually prime Veline´s stars, or similar metal fuelled types such as Buell Red? Apart from employing BP with silicon, what are useful and reliable approaches? Thank you!

I have used the super prime a great deal in the early days and it worked fine on all of the Velines as a single stage (I occasionally gave them a top dusting with BP). However I find the velines pretty easy to light as a rule and just use BP plus 10% silicon to avoid messing with the good old hexavalent chromium, and silicon is pretty cheap.

Now Buell red should be similar to the Veline for ignition ease. Now I find things like Independence red a different animal and always step prime.

#56160 Gummed paper tape

Posted by digger on 15 May 2009 - 02:42 PM

Now then chaps. I was at a meet with a few of you guys quite recently and a few people asked about gummed paper tape.

It would appear that quite a few of you get wide tape fold it and cut it to the required width. Well after some extensive searching I have come across a manufacturer who is prepared to make 200 meter rolls of gummed tape to any width specification I require (11mm to 300mm).

Sooo I have got a quote on a few sizes 18mm (3/4" ish), 24mm (1" ish), 30mm (1 1/4"ish) and 36mm (1 1/2" ish). All the larger sizes are easily available from other suppliers so I have not bothered to get a quote on these.

It looks like I will be putting in an order for the first three of these sizes (covers pasting 3" - 10" shells). The minimum order quantities are rather large so I am gauging interest to see if anyone would like any of these to see if an order is viable.

The prices will be (plus postage on top max cost £10 for up to 25Kg obviously a lot cheeper for sub 5Kg)

18mm x 200M = £1.20
24mm x 200M = £1.60
30mm x 200M = £1.99

Let me know if you are interested.
