To be extra safe, give the drum a rinse with a sulfate solution afterwards. Any remaining barium compounds will be converted into harmless barium sulfate.

I've tried using it as lift, but had to use powder weighing half as much as the shell to gain acceptable height for 1" shells. It seems to be much less pressure sensitive than BP. The stuff becomes quite hygroscopic if oven dried, much less so if it's dried in a pot set in a boiling water bath and stirred frequently. Too much work to make in any case, imho.

The grade of DE to use in the fencepost prime was discussed on Passfire recently, the inventor of the formula said to use only pool filter DE for best effect. Garden DE was dirty and too coarse, food grade was too fine for the prime to work optimally.

Petroleum spirit works well for dissolving stearine, paraffin and similar, acetone is not nearly as efficient. I suspect it's the same way with stearic acid, but I haven't tested it.
