Smoke screen

18 September 2012 - 08:29 PM

Hello all

Its been a while since ive been on here, house shares kinda stopped the hobby for me.

But back to my reason for posting, i have been set the challenge of creating a smoke screen. The task has been to link this too a smoke machine, but after trying several machines, the smoke produced simply isnt filling the room quick enough.

So i have been asked to come up with a chemical option. The first option i tried was hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate. I am awear of the saftey issues with these chemicals and took appropriate precautions, What was good about this reaction was the only gaseous products produced were H2O and O this made a very large, dense and fast "smoke screen" but obviously being water this quickly dissipated and there is concerns over water damage.

No im looking for others options. I have been looking at Titanium TetraOxide and water. from what i have read this produces a very good dense and lasting smoke screen of TiO2 but also HCl.

So to my question, Would it be practical to pass this gasious product through a salt such as Sodium bicarbonate to remove the HCl leave a non-dangerous TiO2 smoke?

If this is practical can i buy TiClO4? if not can i synthesis it?

If this is not a practical solution are there any other suggestions?

The delivery system in mind, would separate solid by products from the outside environment with only the gaseous products leaving the device.

rate of reaction

hey all

im working on a spreadsheet for work.

I calculating how much of a metal will be dissolved in the presence of an acid, that's the easy part.

what im struggling to find is the formulae to calculate how long a reaction will take, given know surface area, molar of acid, type of acid and metal, temperature etc.

any suggestions?

pyro valance

06 December 2011 - 05:03 AM

i was just reading about using the molar mass and valance to work out strochiometic rations. i was working through some examples but was a cant find is how to calculate the valances of molecules.

for instance KClO4 has a valance of -8, NH4NO3 has a valance of -2, i know this because these values were provided, but how are they calculated? and what about for more complex fuels like heximine etc?

accidental formation of fulminates

09 November 2011 - 06:51 PM

Hello All

I was reading something the other day about the chemistry behind fulminates.

this raised a concern for me.

from my understanding a metal fulminate is sythisised by dissolving a metal in nitric acid and then mixing the metal nitrate with ethanol and the crystals filtered off would be a metal fulminate. these fulminates cant be very nasty stuff.

my concern came when i was thinking about construction of some stars. if the star has a metal nitrate in it and ethanol was used as a solvent in the binding. could a metal fulminate be produced?

if so this would make a relatively harmless star quite dangerous would it not?

visiting the states

hey everyone.

im working in Ohio for the next few weeks. i was discussing our hobby with a colleague and he has access to open land, has a fire arms licence and was interested in going through a few experiments

does any know the legal issues out here? i certainly don't want to end up on the wrong side of the law out here as a guest.

also i was wondering if there are any local members and how to get some small quantities of chemicals out here if i can experiment.
