I'd say an anonymous tip to Ebay might help

I agree that we need to be self-policing in order to reduce the amount of idiots and to represent ourselves as a responsible group not a bunch of darwin award winners

I've also noticed that this guy has changed his ebay user id twice in the past 60 days, a bit suss or what ?

He also was previously representing himself on ebay as a limited liability company when he was not registered with companies house

this guy is the sort of person that could and no doubt will generate a lot of bad rep for the pyro community :(

I hope he does! thats the kind of person who indiscriminatly sells whatever to whoever and isnt concerned with the results. One of the main reasins no one finds oxidisers on my page because I wouldnt want to be involved with supplying something thats not readily available to the public anyway.

Well if he keeps re-advertising then perhaps a call to Crime Stoppers might be in order ?

It is very frustrating to see these sorts of listings.

I have also seen 100g of Iodine going for $180. The seller didn't even try and hide the (totally legit) company name on the label. Buying direct would cost you £7.15 (Yes, it's a UK company that perhaps should be careful about selling Iodine to the US given that it is now a list I chemical).

Personally, I'm now very wary about buying stuff on Ebay. Best to use companies you can trust that do things within the law.

Simon.

I thought Iodine was DEA List 2, did they change it ?

Anyway that guy might get an early a.m call soon

Iodine prices are insane on ebay and the likes

Its like $20 a kilogram from lab suppliers and a bit more from horse / animal suppliers.

Hi StephF,

Unfortunately (for US home chemists) it went List I last year :-(

SUMMARY: This rulemaking changes the regulation of the listed chemical
iodine under the chemical regulatory provisions of the Controlled
Substances Act (CSA). The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
believes that this action is necessary to remove deficiencies in the
existing regulatory controls, which have been exploited by drug
traffickers who divert iodine (in the form of iodine crystals and
iodine tincture) for the illicit production of methamphetamine in
clandestine drug laboratories. This rulemaking moves iodine from List
II to List I; reduces the iodine threshold from 0.4 kilograms to zero
kilograms; adds import and export regulatory controls; and controls

[[Page 35921]]

chemical mixtures containing greater than 2.2 percent iodine.
This rulemaking establishes regulatory controls that will apply to
iodine crystals and iodine chemical mixtures that contain greater than
2.2 percent iodine. This regulation therefore controls iodine crystals
and strong iodine tinctures/solutions (e.g., 7 percent iodine) that do
not have common household uses and instead have limited application in
livestock, horses, and for disinfection of equipment. Household
products such as 2 percent iodine tincture/solution and household
disinfectants containing iodine complexes will not be adversely
impacted by this regulation. Additionally, the final rule exempts
transactions of up to one-fluid-ounce (30 ml) of Lugol's Solution.
Persons handling regulated iodine materials are required to
register with DEA, are subject to the import/export notification
requirements of the CSA, and are required to maintain records of all
regulated transactions involving iodine regardless of size.

DATES: This rulemaking becomes effective on August 1, 2007. Persons
seeking registration must apply on or before August 31, 2007 in order
to continue their business pending final action by DEA on their
application.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Christine A. Sannerud, Ph.D., Chief,
Drug and Chemical Evaluation Section, Office of Diversion Control, Drug
Enforcement Administration, Washington, DC 20537 at (202) 307-7183.

Regards,
Simon.

Don't want to be contentious here, but again I think there is a danger of us shooting ourselves in the foot.

There is no 'pyro community' in this country. Of the 5000 odd people registered on this board, I imagine less than 10 can legally make pyro. However 2500 probably do and alot of their supplies do not come from squeeky clean sources.

Now frankly, the authorities are not interested in a few 'nutty professors' (yes that's me) doing small scale pyro (as long as they do not do any damage or frighten the horses). They are out to get terrorists and drug chemists - and I wish them every success.

I think they will persue anyone doing these things quite vigorously enough without us getting involved. We should not be drawing attention to ourselves by getting involved, or potentially destroying our sources of materials.

What we should be doing is campaigning for concessions in the law so that we can carry out our hobby legally. Rocket hobbyists have recently got concessions such that they can purchase motors with up to 1 Kg of propellant and store up to 5 Kg without having to register their premises. It can be done!
