Safety concerns are *never* off topic here.

I know that, but still my post could have been taken as a flame which in my opinion would be counted off topic, much the same as this post; for which I apologise also!

Mike

Made my first cylindrical shell today with winkour 20 and a few left over green and purple stars.

I was all ready to fire tonight when I found out the tube I was going to use as my mortar is just slightly too small :( I'm frantically looking for a replacment but not having much success.

Another option is to do the spiking again with a slightly thinner yarn!

One additional tip: Cut the fuse to the desired lenght (cut in a slight angle!) and prime it with bp slurry.
You´ll find out at one time or another that visco fuse is destoyed by the lift charge and thus does
not take fire...

Another tip: Add a final layer paste-soaked kraft paper around it which holds the spiking pattern in place.

Would be too sad for your first shell not to take fire and hit the ground intact... :)

Thanks for the tips Paul. I was planning on cutting the fuse just before lauching it but didn't consider priming, sounds like a good idea. Also I tried thinner yarn but even without spiking there was still a small amount of friction when put in the tube.

Anyway I've been asking the nurses at my work to look out for tubes for my 'Art' and was pointed in the direction of the recycling bins. I found quite a few salvagable things including a 2" tube so I'll probably attempt my shell in the next few days.

Having stoped smoking recently i go to a place to have my CO level tested and they use these disposable tubes for the mouthpiece. They must be of some use for pyro. The tubes look like this ...

They must be dirt cheap as they use LOADS of them

I have seen those exact same tubes and had those ideas too. They are quite thin and weak so would not stand up to much. The only real uses i could see for them would be salutes or possibly small canister shells.
James
I'm sorry, how long did you say the fuse was?

With you on the strength issue (thats why i post it here, like you say they would be ideal for salutes) but the ones at this clinic look thicker,im goin to get the web address off the box next time i go to see if they do diferent sizes.
