Well you can ask this question everytime anything happens with anything. Do you sue a company that makes hot plates if you're stupid enough to press your hand on it while it's hot? No....
With such an attitude you wouldn't be able to sell even a packet of peanuts because someone may eat them and die, then their family may sue your ass for selling an alergic person peanuts.... sadly enough this could actually happen so I understand your concerns to a degree.

You miss the point a little bit....it is not illegal to sell hotplates or peanuts to anyone (well not yet anyway) but fireworks are a different matter. Most eBay sellers use PAYPAL, I know a lot of minors that have access to eBay and could easily pay for these "age restricted items".

If you are in the business of selling something that is strictly governed by law (and yes I agree that some of the laws are too restrictive) then it is fair for me to get annoyed when others blatantly flout these laws. Make it a level playing field and ALL legitimate vendors will benefit.

And the same applies to solvents and bleach...

Look, there is NO way of stopping terrorism by controlling access to the goods. They can still get them on the black market. The only way is to remove the motive for terrorism, which is educating children in poverty ect.

All this anti-terrorism hysteria shows that terrorism works. It is sad. You are more likely to be killed by a flea.

Sorry, What terrorist hysteria?

I'm not talking about terrorism

I'm talking about sellers, any sellers, that circumvent the rules that we obey during the course of our trade. This costs us money, puts up our prices and so means the customer is more likely to go to the "underhand dealer" who is perhaps selling untested, unclassified and potential dangerous goods. Don't forget, if there is an accident it is the WHOLE industry that suffers.

I would expect that the authorities would act decisively if given infromation that will keep our industry clean and safe. Problem is they DON'T act and so it is benefitial not to obey the rules.

analogy: 5 years ago it would have cost a 21 year old £500 to insure his car, chances of getting stopped were slim and so it was worth the risk NOT to insure. If caught the penalty was only a £200 fine. hence we had a massive increase in uninsured drivers on our roads.
However;
Authorities DID act and we now have ANPR equipped police cars everywhere so the chances of getting stopped (detected) have increased so it is better to pay £500 for insurance rather than £200 every other week. All this goes on withou any adverse effect on those who obey the law.

Clamp down on those who sell illegally, stop making it cost effective for them and we can all get on and play nice. not a lot to ask is it in a civilised society? ;)

Yes I had read the OP, the coment about "terrorist hysteria2 was in a post that quoted me, so I responded.

I see now that my train of thought on here may have been "off topic" so sorry if it confused.

I am not concerned about terrorists getting their hand on stuff, they will do that no matter what legislation is imposed on us, making our lives harder. My concern was more to do with items getting to the wrong people (minors) and/or being sold in breach of the current laws - laws which we abide by and a ssuch suffer additional costs. Hope that clears it up.

as for suicide fleas, they only threaten to blow up if you do not believe in their Dog....

If they want to make life harder and add EVEN MORE restrictions to buying chemicals which may be used for gardening, cleaning, cosmetics, fireworks or even b**bs then why do we not also put licenses on knifes, hammer, pens, pencils, rulers, razor blades, spades, cigarettes, pharmaceutical drugs (used wrongly) etc all of which kill more people than any firework, chemical or b**b would.

I am sick of hearing about terrorists, whit pissing whooo, this is the type of thing they want MASS PANIC. Soon we will not be able to go out the front door because we will all be scared of the next terrorist strike due to the government and media over populating peoples scared minds with useless shit. Give the media a bush and a pack of matches and you will have an headline stating 'Huge forest fire sweeps through England' they have to over hype a story just to get paid so what comes out of a paper take it with a grain of salt much like the guy at the pub saying he is rich.

England is no longer England as the media and the government and certain small minority groups have split people apart. Once we all used to be social and an actual country but now..... what the hell have we become? We are more like that spider running away from your foot trying to kill it. I believe people need to stand up and fight for what is right instead of letting a few ass wholes do it for us.

Next time I want a map I best go in my ninja suit, wouldn't want anyone thinking I was a terrorist now would I!

Hope I haven't offended anyone as that wasn't my intention.

Anyone who thinks that state surveillance helps a society should look at East Germany, and East Berlin.

East Berlin had about 30% of the population "reporting" on someone else. If you were in a band (music!) at least one member of the band would be a state informer. They had to build a wall to keep the residents IN

Keep mannequins and watermelons away from fireworks..they always get hurt..

Amen to that , I too am not an exponent of the nanny state.

Having said that I had to stop and think for a while to try and weigh up all the pros & cons before I made that phone call.

I figured that not only was there a potential problem with terrorists but there is also a second class of people, usually younger kids who treat chemistry and exps with no respect.

I only have to scan through some of the posts on places like Roguesci to see that.

True! I am sure though many house hold chemicals can be used to cause harm, dam just the other day I found out my table salt contained cyanide  as a free flow agent.

True as that is I think it would be very difficult and totally impracticable to try and extract the cyanide in order to use it to harm someone.

It would be far easier to belt the offending party with a baseball bat , not that I am trying to encourage violence as a way of solving issues ! :)
