Would 7-9 turns of kraft work?  Mainly because it is reusable and wont possibly ruin another tube used as a sleeve.

That depends on what type of glue you use, and the thickness/quality of your kraftpaper.
PVA glue will probably work best.

Sorry for bringing the thread back from the dead, but I feel the questions I will be asking can help avoid further questions when the topic of whistles is searched and this is found.

Like I stated before I want to make a scaled up version of the popular cake found in assortment packs in the U.S., saturn missiles. Only thing is while thinking over on how I will be doing the fusing, taping, etc. if everything will work out fine.

I will be making it a 25 shot cake mainly because it gets rather annoying hearing whistles and 1g booms to most audiences (I love it :D ) and it is a bit time consuming. I purchased 100 3/8" ID 5/8" OD 3 1/2" length parallel tubes from skylighter which are my whistles. Would the whistle have enough thrust to make it out of a 5/8" ID tube if it isnt hard to get the whistle out by hand but wont fall out when held upside down?

Last question, I think. When I will be fusing everything I was thinking using Chinese visco (hot burning) throughout the whole cake, but for each whistle a piece of vis-quick tied to the visco that goes up and lights the whistle. Now still waiting for my press to arrive I do not know how easily Perc/Benz whistle ignites so will the vis-quick(I will fold instead of going just straight up)ignite the whistle?

Thanks again guys!

You will need some lift to pop the whistle units from the tube. Use 1/4g of BP to get them going. You will need to put a piece of bent blackmatch in the mouth of the whistle with some BP touching the power inside the unit to get reliable ignition.

For fusing you can just use visco for the entire timing. Make 1 hole in each 'launch' tube and bend the visco at 180deg and then back to 0deg to carry on the sequence. Insert the bent section of fuse into the hole and poke it in with an awl etc.

IE:

| xxxxx BP xxxxxx |
| xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx | Tube with hole
|_____| || |_____|
.............||
======||===== --> to next tube

This diagram probably doesnt make any sense but if you need a further explaination I'll have to fire up Paintbrush...

Is BP 100% necessary, again because I have no time to go out buy parts and make a mill and my mill is on back order so no BP, unless I can get my uncle who can buy BP for his rifle to somehow get some 4F BP for me.

Only thing is will 1/4g of BP totally launch it out of the tube and then it would ignite and face at audience. The audience will not be in range of the whistle but I would rather it go straight then halfway into its flight start to go crazy like a saturn missile, mainly because I could be in the range, though a longer fuse would be put on after some testing.

The whistling cakes that I have seen used BP to fire the whistle just like any other insert. It does not ascend under it's own power, particularly. The whistle spins around and wobbles all over the place as it flies, but it is the momentum it gains from the lift charge which propels it, not the thrust from the unit itself. As was recently discussed on rec.pyrotechnics, since it is spinning around, and intermittently thrusting in all directions, the net thrust is nil, so it just goes the direction you shoot it. There is a chance that it could randomly shoot off in one direction or the other, but this shouldn't be too likely.

As for your BP, you don't need a mill. Grind your ingredients with a coffee grinder or pestle and mortar, or even a hammer, then make precipitation BP. If this is not fast enough, then you have the chemicals necessary for benzolift, which I am sure will be.

Hi all. While surfing the web i came across a video of a multishot whistle cake with an errie sound to them. I can remember hearing these years ago and just wonderd how it was done ,maybe whistle mix in a hummer type casing (probably not).

This is the link th the video

I am guessing some form of hummer with a perchlorate based composition. I have used these An Ping candles in the past, they are positively flatulent!

:lol: I suppose thats one way of putting it . I always thought it sounded like something been ripped.
they are one of the most attractive (not that i like flatulence by the way) whistle's in my eye's and did think it would have been a more energetic composition .

It sounds very much like the AnPing/Hebei Lion candle pot (7 x 16mm candles in a bundle). I've heard these described as "buzzers", the units are similar in construction to a hummer, though the ones I looked at didn't have the jet hole made tangentially, just a 3...4mm hole straight in the side of the tube 1/2 way along: overall length was about 25...30mm. Composition seemed to be something like a fierce green streamer star mix, but if I remember correctly it burnt somewhat unsteadily, which may account for the flatulent sound rather than the smoother voooooooooooom that normal hummers make.

Interesting, but would the tube still spin with a straight hole . Another thought i had is rather the hole been made tangentially, it's still made in the side but pointing down at a certain angle , would this effect the sound ?
