I am having major problems with making 'lift' powder. I have tried just plain 6hr milled BP and this did not really work. I have tried using pulverone and this also does not really work!

I tried playing with the amounts of 'lift' i used and this had no real effect.

Does the 'projectile' (in my case a small charcoal star) have to fit snugly in the tube?

So please help! Im not sure if it is my BP or something else? Any thoughts or help GREATLY appreactated!

How fast does the powder burn on its own? Does it take fire instantly from a smouldering splint? Does it burn with a "whoompf" or more of a "sssssss"?

What were the dimentions of the tube and star? A snug fit is always good, but not completely nessicairy.

What happens when you try using the powder straight out of the mill? How exactly does it not work?

Have you tried using tissue wadding above the star in the tube?

6h should be OK in a ball mill that operates optimum. Mill it longer, say turn the mill on in the morning and turn it off when you go to bed.

I tried playing with the amounts of 'lift' i used and this had no real effect.

I use this ammounts of lift +-5g: 2"=15g; 3"=25g and 4"=35g. Depending on the wheight of the shells (my shells wheigh about (+-50g; this depends greatly on the stuffing :) ) 2"=100g; 3"150g and 4" 200g). Sperical shells.

No. Not at all.

Mill it more and/or use another kind of coal. I use the superpulverone method in best of AFN III. I mill my C+S for 60h. A tip off a spoon is enough to blow my startesing papertubes into shrapnells if i use a to big paper plugg to hold the star in plase.

Cocoa powder isn't stronger than normal BP - it was designed to burn slowly for use in really large guns.

Look in the database under 'Black powders' and then 'Firearms-specific powder.
