#88654 Boric acid

Posted by martyn on 03 January 2018 - 06:48 PM

Yo might have been thinking about oxalic acid.

That was regulated by the EPP laws.

Despite that, it is easily available on ebay as well.

I don't think bee keepers worry too much about EPP.

Try one in a star gun.

Ramco, tender sales.

Hope the link works

https://ramco.uk/ind...&controller=cms

Edit, that doesn't seem to work for some reason.

If you look on ramco, then tender sales, then search for shrike, that should find them.

#87332 A&K Application problems review...

Posted by martyn on 19 June 2016 - 05:14 PM

.............. We agree this is wrong but WE are not the people to lobby against him. We are trying to alter this proactively through the routes we have and unfortunately they are slowly being exhausted................

I would hope it would be part of the remit of the ukps to lobby against individual elo's exceeding their authority when they insist on applicants proving competence. If not the UKPS, who would do it in a cohesive and targeted manner?

I am very happy that Wayne seems to be trying to intervene, hopefully on general principles rather than with individual cases.

It is assumed and allowed for in the legislation that we are of unproven and varied competence, that is why we are limited to sub 100g.

From a legal (police) point of view, I believe an untrained girl guide could start work in a licenced explosive factory tomorrow without proving competence and work with Kg's of composition. Other legislation would of course come into play but this is of no concern of the elo.

I know that 100g of many pyrotechnic compositions can do a great deal of  harm, but frankly it is in the same ball park if misused as  cylinders of propane or oxy-acetylene, or a gallon or two of petrol. All of which may be acquired, stored and experimented with without proving competence.

Part of the problem, which is very common with us lot, is lack of communication. Most of us don't know what goes on in the background, and as a consequence assume that nothing is happening, where quite possibly it is. Wayne did say that he was hoping to make contact with the elo during a particular week, and then it all went quiet, qyuite possibly having ground to a halt, or possibly on the verge of success, we just don't know. I understand that cards need to be played close to the chest at times, but a fortnightly update of what is and isn't happening or planned would go a long way to satisfying people. It's the same with the agm, none of us plebs know nuffink :-)

#87097 help me out - regarding laws and regulations regarding pyrotechnics.

Posted by martyn on 05 April 2016 - 12:09 PM

Well, in the spirit of using the forum as a forum, here are my thoughts.

Dissecting a cake is likely to be considered an act of manufacture and therefore illegal unless at a licenced site. Can't see anyone getting overly upset though, until something goes wrong.

Using an ematch or talon to light the fuse is ok - it's what they are designed for. Some cakes will have visco, some will have a bit of quickmatch buried somewhere if you have a poke about.

Making something cheap and loud is easy but illegal because it will be for practical use, not experimentation, demonstration or testing. The hairy re enacters don't seem to bother too much about this though - they may be your best source of info.

If you have insurances for theatrical pyro, it's not that big a step to get storage and insurance sorted for cat 4material. Then you will have access to single shots, salutes and any other goodies. The problem may come in your intended use, ie not a firework display, not insurmountable though I would think.

I'm not sure I'm a fan of all this 'phone me and I'll tell you in secret' malarkey, especially as the question was asked on an open forum. :-)

#85029 2015 AGM - May 9th, Worksop

Posted by martyn on 01 May 2015 - 12:09 PM

I'm just deciding if this is going to be worthwhile for a 5 -6 hr round trip for the talks as I cant stay for the evening events.

Is there any update on the replacement for Danny and the subject of Phill's talk.

My problem is I've seen Ron L. talking  before and I think Roger's bit will irritate me :-) (no offence Arthur)

The chance of cheap meths might just sway it though.

Decisions, decisions.

#81288 Licence to purchase chemicals - A show of hands of who would obtain one...

Posted by martyn on 11 February 2014 - 11:40 PM

Now what I would like to see, is that qualified membership of the UKPS (not just the forum) WAS the qualification to buy store and use the chemicals we want.

I couldn't disagree more with this Arthur.

Whilst I support the UKPS, I'm not really sure why, perhaps because there is no alternative in this country and I perhaps feel the need to be part of the club and give mysely a false air of legitimacy :-)

I'm not knocking it (us) I've met some nice and knowledgeble people and some great contacts, but.

We are a fairly haphazard seat of the pants outfit. It would only take three or four of the key players to drop out for the society to fall apart IMHO.

We are not completely representative of the homebrew pyro community, and no better or worse than those other enthusiasts who choose not to join.

Let the govt administer licensing when it comes and let those who don't want to join us be free to be independent.

I'm hoping when / if the law is amended to allow small scale experimentation, a few more people will come out of the woodwork, and join at least the forum, to discuss aspects of what is currently illegal to practice. Without fear of the 0500hrs knock.

#79202 2013 AGM Announced

Posted by martyn on 07 February 2013 - 11:59 AM

Whilst I agree that we should be promoting the UKPS as much as we can, I'm a bit undecided about the love affair with the general public, town criers etc.

I wouldn't want the AGM to be dumbed down to the level that had mass 'bloke in the street' appeal.

For me, the attraction of the AGM is the specialist / professional / 'nerdy' speakers. (meant in the kindest possible way and I include myself as a firework nerd)

I also enjoy the atmosphere that we are all 'friends' and part of the family and as such can chat to each other without worrying too much about what we are saying.

As for the display, the more spectators the merrier.

It's hard to get my view across without sounding unwelcoming, I'd just be a bit concerned that we may end up with a load of people who had walked into the hall and didn't get what they were expecting.

Good luck in buying anything, even a book, from skylighter if you are in the UK.
Agree the site is interesting for info though, Ned G seems heavily involved.
