In Topic: Major fire at fireworks factory

04 December 2006 - 10:57 PM

Very sad to see this storey all over the news. Just another item that the media have turned into a negative for the industry.
I do tend to wonder why the firefighters even approached the area, I doubt that any of them are trained in dealing with explosives which at the end of the day is exactly what fireworks are. Some of the news comments like "they didnt expect an explosion or they would not have approached the area".. come on.. its a fireworks factory, loads of gunpowder and other chemical formulas packaged and designed to explode. I know from my own firefighter days that training did include a lot of science based information around chemicals, lots which react violently when comming in contact with water so hosing down would not have been that appropriate.
I know from conversations over the years that firecrews near to KF have been told that in the event of a fire they are not to approach but to cordon off the area and let it burn itself out... exactly what should have taken place at this incident.
Possibly this was the case, possibly the people that lost there lives were first on scene and disregarded both orders and there own safety to try and accertain if there was anyone at the site that needed assistance.
Hopefully.. but I doubt it, more information will become available that will answer some of these queries as well as to the inicial cause of this fire.

Skywalker,

Good on you for standing up to these idiots. In the same position I would have acted in the same way. The outcome of this is not only going to be how the facts stack up in court but also what the mindset of the judge is that will be presiding over your case.

In realistic terms given the facts you have provided, firstly the kids were below the legal age to handle or poses fireworks.. Secondly they were using them in a dangerous manour in a public place and thirdly they attacked you first.
A resonable laywer (dependent on the judge) should be able to prove that the individuals concerned were breaking the law and the attack by yourself was in self defence. I would hope that your representative would be laying a charge of agravated asault against the individuals for throwing the firework at you as well as charges relating to various public order offenses.. and lets not forget the charges for possesing fireworks under the legal age (guess the parents may have some explaining to do here as well).
I expect that even if the judge does go hardline with the individuals he still may formally warn you as he would not like it to be seen that he condones a few teenagers being beaten up even if there is just cause.
Depending on your circumstaces you may or not be entitled to legal aid but you need to look into this as soon as possible.

Only one query.. I note what appears to be 3 battery's on the top left, which leaves me to query what the mains cable resting in the lid is for ?

Also as it has a remote, is the signal encrypted in any way to protect the device from being activated by a car remote or tv remote or any other external interferance ?

Shrubsole.. for what they cost, places such as MLE and Kimbolton sell these and they are not expensive.
