The AGM is a once a year opportunity to get together with like minded people and discuss 'things' you can't with other friends etc.
The display is simply a letting off steam finale to the day. If this becomes a big organising and crowd control task then it definitely detracts from the whole point.
And definitely no public at the AGM, a few interested possible new members but an open door would mean we could not openly discuss what we do etc.

I had to have a look too - could only find make- up flash powder .... Presumably it has a different effect !
